A unique piece of art, the Maquette was produced and acquired by Sistership thanks to the collaboration of several funders. The concept began with Heather Webber, a former Sistership president, who drew inspiration from her travels. In 2008, the first installment toward the maquette was made, with support from Wendy McLeish, who coordinated the scale model production. Over 3 years (2008–2010), the maquette and its display came together. Funding for the project was bolstered by a generous $10,000 contribution from the Canadian Cancer Society.
The artist commissioned for the remarkable creation was Brian Cooley, a Canadian sculptor renowned for his work with dinosaur reconstructions, with completed projects displayed at the Royal Tyrell Museum. Notably, Brian was the brother of Brenwyn Cooley, another former Sistership president. His skills were instrumental in bringing this vision to life.
The Maquette is currently on display at YMCA Calgary’s Rocky Ridge location where it encapsulates Sistership’s spirit and resilience in a lasting tribute.
Three Sistership Legacy Benches can be found within Calgary’s city limits for hikers and solace-seekers alike to rest and reflect. The first bench was installed in 2000 in memory of teammates who passed. The bench overlooks the team’s home dragon boat race site on the Glenmore Reservoir.
The two other benches were installed in 2014 and 2015 in Glenmore Park, close to the Calgary Canoe Club and at Nose Hill Park. Both face ponds and can be located on park’s bench maps.
